How-to Guide to Taking Photos

Dr. Freeman has provided a video that explains how the  tele-dentistry portal works as well as some helpful tips for taking your photos.

Watch Now

Once you have entered your information into the portal, a how-to video guides you through  taking the photos (if you would prefer to view the video before visiting the portal, you can Watch it Here).  It is best not the use the portal until you are ready to take the photos.  Without photos Dr. Freeman cannot provide much guidance.

Dr. Freeman's 5 recommendations to taking great photos:

  1. Designate a photographer
  2. Force your smartphone camera's flash to the "ON" setting
  3. Take photos VERY close to the mouth
  4. Hold the smartphone parallel to the mouth
  5. Take all FIVE photos (while the patient uses their fingers to gently pull the lips and cheeks away from the teeth)

See the images below for example:

It is nearly impossible to take diagnostic photos of yourself.  The patient has the job of holding their lips out of the way while the photo is taken.  Unless you are using a self-timer and a tripod it is not possible to use both hands to pull lips out of the way and take a selfie!  Also the photo cannot be well framed if you are taking a selfie.  Making things even more of a challenge is that selfies are often mirrored.  If a photo is mirrored right and left are flipped and Dr. Freeman might give incorrect advice.  Please use a photographer if at all possible!

The flash needs to be forced "ON” (not Auto.)  The mouth is a dark place!  Dr. Freeman needs to see the back molars as much as the front incisors.  Without a flash the back of the mouth fades into darkness.

Please take photos VERY close to the mouth.  Flashes on smartphones are not powerful.  The closer the smartphone is to the mouth the better the flash works.  Also significant resolution is lost when photos are uploaded.  The closer the camera the greater the resolution.

Hold the camera parallel to the face/mouth.  If a tall person takes photos of a short patient the photographer must bend down so that the camera is looking directly into the mouth.  If photos are taken at significant angles the photos have limited value.

Take all five photos.  Each view provides part of the information Dr. Freeman needs to make his recommendations.
